In his book Digital Minimalism, Cal Newport provides a philosophy on how to approach and integrate technology into our daily lives. Rather than outlining a few quick tips to hack our (often addictive) habits, Newport urges readers to review the platforms we use on a regular basis and evaluate what purpose they serve and whether that purpose aligns with our personal values. Although I am generally not a fan of self-help books, I read his piece in just a few sittings. Newport is an excellent writer, who draws on different historical examples to make sense of contemporary society’s struggles with technology. Digital Minimalism is also for all readers. I deleted my remaining social media account a few months ago, and this book both affirmed some of the things I have been feeling since unplugging and also gave me great new things to consider.
