Between North America and Europe, there lie nine islands known as the Azores that were discovered in the 14th century. Today, they are an autonomous region of Portugal. Since their discovery, myths and mysteries have surrounded these volcanic islands. Elsie Spicer Eells recounts some of the more notable folktales of the islands in her collection The Islands of Magic: Legends, Folk and Fairy Tales from the Azores. One of the more famous legends is that the Azores are the remains of the lost city of Atlantis, the long-dormant volcanic peeks being the mountain tops of the former metropolis. The collection opens with a folktale about Atlantis’s demise when a powerful fairy curses an impatient king. The fantastical tales are brief and geared towards younger audiences. It is worth noting that some of the perspectives are dated and may not make much sense for contemporary readers.
