Sarajevo Marlboro
(Sarajevo Marlboro by Miljenko Jergović)

Miljenko Jergović’s short story collection Sarajevo Marlboro was published during the Yugoslav Wars in 1994.  Jergović depicts everyday citizens living in Sarajevo through a series of vignettes.  The short narratives sometimes show how the war impacts the Sarajevo residents, but often, it is only in the background.  In many respects, Sarajevo Marlboro is a melancholic version of Alan Lightman’s collection Einstein’s Dreams.  The stories can be consumed in quick succession, but readers need to slow down and sit with each narrative to fully grasp each one.  Despite their brevity, the stories are nuanced, exploring the specificities of the multicultural Bosnian identity.  The title further alludes to the uniqueness of the Bosnian culture.  After studying the local cuisine, Philip Morris Inc. created the Sarajevo Marlboro, a cigarette brand designed to suit the Bosnian palate and considered one of the company’s best blends.
