At a Glance: Lemon

Lemon by Kwon Yeo-Sun
(Lemon by Kwon Yeo-Sun)

Much like the fruit, Lemon, Kwon Yeo-Sun’s first English translated book, is a vibrant, searingly curt read.  At first glance, this novella feels like a classic murder mystery, complete with thickheaded police officers and a beautiful, virginal victim on the precipice of adulthood.  Kwon turns many of these classic thriller tropes on their head by refocusing the narrative on the women surrounding the victim and how each copes with the homicide.  Kwon’s female characters contend with grief, revenge and acceptance in specific and sometimes awkward ways.  Overall, Lemon was a quick, enjoyable read; however, it sometimes felt the translation limited the narrative’s impact.
