Free Food for Millionaires is the debut 2007 novel of Min Jin Lee, who also authored the best-selling novel Pachinko. Much like Pachinko, Lee’s first novel is meticulously researched, full of true-to-life characters and an absolute pleasure to read. As readers, you get the sense that every sentence is deliberately constructed, and there are no extraneous or unintentional bits. Even the protagonist’s name, Casey Han, was carefully selected, which Lee explains in an interview with Grand Central Publishing. While reading Free Food for Millionaires, I felt like a kid again. I hoarded this book to make it last longer and often went to bed excited to read it in the morning over coffee, only to wake up hours earlier than I planned from excitement.
